AGB Search is pleased to assist Bowie State University with its search for a Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, this position will oversee the 18 undergraduate and seven graduate programs in Bowie State’s largest college, supervising chairs of academic departments and advancing ongoing curricular development, assessment, and advancement of the college’s programs.
Founded in 1865, Bowie State University (BSU) is Maryland’s oldest Historically Black College or University (HBCU) and is one of 12 constituent institutions of the University System of Maryland. With an enrollment of more than 6,300, BSU is a diverse university whose students, faculty, and staff represent many ethnic and cultural backgrounds. BSU is centrally located in one of the nation’s most exciting metropolitan areas within easy reach of Washington, DC, Baltimore, and Annapolis, and boasts a serene, 337-acre suburban campus.
The dean is responsible for preparing budgets, serving on the Provost’s Council, recruiting well-qualified professors, acting as a spokesperson for the college, and serving as a liaison with area leaders. The dean also oversees faculty development, tenure, and promotion to ensure the high-quality teaching and research that is central to BSU’s mission.
The new dean will possess an earned doctorate in a related field, have a proven record as a scholar and educator, and bring significant academic and leadership experience to this position. A clear understanding of and commitment to the role of HBCUs in educating the next generation of leaders is essential.
